Out-for-delivery notification via WhatsApp API

The scenario sends the customer a personalized WhatsApp template when their order is handed to a delivery partner for last-mile fulfilment.

Use case overview

The scenario sends the customer a personalized WhatsApp template when their order is handed to a delivery partner for last-mile fulfilment. The message includes the customer name, order number, product name, and courier or delivery window note. A static URL button opens the shipment tracking page.

Template example

Hello, {{1}}! Order #{{2}} for "{{3}}" has been handed off to delivery. {{4}}.

Track delivery
  • {{1}}
    customer name
  • {{2}}
    order number
  • {{3}}
    product name
  • {{4}}
    courier name, delivery window, or handoff note
  • “Track delivery”
    button — fixed in the Meta template

When to use it

Reach for this scenario when the logistics platform marks an order as handed to a last-mile courier or delivery partner and the customer still has no open WhatsApp conversation — only an approved template can reach them first. It fits last-mile logistics teams bridging hub-to-courier moves, e-commerce stores clarifying the gap between warehouse shipped and courier en route, and integrators wiring TMS handoff webhooks into WhatsApp outbound.

Clearer last-mile visibility
Four body variables carry the customer name, order number, product name, and courier or delivery window note, so the handoff lands in WhatsApp with timing context instead of leaving the customer stuck after the warehouse update.
Tracking without support calls
A static URL button fixed in the approved template opens the shipment tracking page from the same message, so the customer does not hunt for a link in email or call for status.
No manual status messages
The TMS or carrier handoff event resolves the phone number and fires the template, so no one retypes order details when the parcel moves to the courier network.
Works outside the 24-hour window
Because the customer may have no open conversation after warehouse shipment, an approved template is the channel that can confirm last-mile delivery started without waiting for a reply.
Logged handoff for CRM follow-up
Delivery result is written back after send, so the e-commerce platform or CRM keeps the same record for logistics follow-up.

Workflow

  1. Trigger

    The TMS or carrier marks the order as handed to delivery and fires an event.

    event · triggered

  2. Capture event

    The system resolves the customer phone number and handoff fields.

    phone: "+…"

  3. Build & send

    A personalized template message is built with four body variables and a static URL button.

    POST /sendTemplate

  4. Delivered

    The customer receives the WhatsApp update and can open tracking via the button.

    delivered

  5. Status tracked

    Delivery result is logged; errors are handled according to platform rules.

Response and delivery status

HTTP 2xx and JSON "sent": true mean 1MSG accepted the message for sending — not that it already reached the customer's phone. Save the id field (looks like wamid.…) to correlate delivery callbacks.

200 OKResponse
{
  "sent": true,
  "message": "Sent to [email protected]",
  "description": "Message has been sent to the provider",
  "id": "wamid.HBgLMzgwNjM5..."

  • sent

    Accepted for sending — not yet on the customer's phone

  • id

    Store it; delivery callbacks and hookInfo are keyed on this
